A/Professor John Yaxley has a special interest in the investigation, diagnosis and management of prostate cancer. He is an experienced urological surgeon having performed over 3000 radical prostatectomy procedures, including over 1000 with the robot-assisted laparoscopic technique. Additionally, he has performed over 1000 prostate brachytherapy procedures. He is also experienced in new emerging treatments including focal ablation of prostate cancer with the NanoKnife irreversible electroporation technique, which aims to help maintain patient’s quality of life.
After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 1986, A/Professor Yaxley was awarded his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1995. His post fellowship specialist training was at the Bristol Urology Institute in the United Kingdom in 1996-97. A/Professor Yaxley is a past Chairman of the Northern Section of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand. In 2010, he was awarded the Surgeon General John White Medal for his services to health.
A/Professor Yaxley has a strong academic interest. He has published over 140 manuscripts in international peer reviewed journals and is reviewer for many international urology journals. He is on the Editorial Board of the journal Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases. A/Professor Yaxley is involved in academic teaching programs for students at the University of Queensland and is a supervisor of advanced urological registrar trainees at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
